State Politicians Sneak NICS Expansion Bill!

Gunderson and Darling pushing expansion of unconstitutional National Instant Check System (NICS), de facto gun registration and mental health veterans’ disarmament scheme through Madison

Alert! State Politicians to Expand the NICS Gun Registration Scheme!Madison, Wis. – On Saturday, February 28, 2009, the National Rifle Association - Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) sent out its most recent e-mail alert, (NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert Vol. 16, No. 8) alerting gun owners in Wisconsin to two gun-related bills in the state legislature: The Governor’s proposed increase in the cost of background checks (Opposed by WGO) and castle doctrine legislation (Supported by WGO).

The NRA is on the right side of these two issues, but what they didn’t mention in those newsletters was anything about AB70 or SB44—two bills being pushed by liberal Republicans to expand the unconstitutional National Instant Check System (NICS) in the state of Wisconsin to integrate far-reaching health record data at the state level with federal-level data.

In other words, a state-level version of the Veteran Disarmament Bill (HR2640) the NRA supported (against the cries of scores of gun owners) at the federal level last year.

Gunderson Pushes De Facto Gun Registration
State Rep. Scott Gunderson is pushing AB70, a bill that will expand the unconstitutional background check systems to mental health data can be used to disarm you without due process.

NICS, of course, is the de facto gun registration scheme lauded by the anti-gun movement and embraced by the institutional gun lobby who seem to believe it will appease the gun control lobby (hint: it won’t – in fact, it will only whet their appetite and inch them closer to total control of your firearms).

Assembly Bill 70 and Senate Bill 44 would dangerously expand state-level back ground checks to include far-reach medical data.

As of March 6, 2009, there were no registered lobbying topics on the NRA’s page at the State Government Accountability Board website regarding these two dangerous bills. But if they take the same position they did with the federal version of this legislation, they will support it.

On the contrary, Wisconsin Gun Owners did notify this date the Government Accountability Board (GAB) with our position on these bills. And our position on these bills was a unanimous OPPOSED.

Did the NRA give its usual “silent nod” to the bill, quietly allowing it to pass?

The federal version of this gun control scheme, HR2640, was passed into law by what most gun owners considered a betrayal of trust by congressional republicans and the NRA last year.

Gun Owners of America (GOA), the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) and Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) (along with an army of rock-solid state-level gun rights organizations from across the country ) steadfastly opposed the mental health bills on the basis that it would subject gun owners and their rights to arbitrary “diagnosis” by psychiatrists.

Dubbed the Veterans Disarmament Act, it was passed into law and has since become a virtual nightmare for thousands of veterans. Nightmarish stories are already surfacing about gun owners who lost the right to keep and bear arms without due process.

All it takes is one anti-gun government mental health crony to declare you “adjudicated mentally defective” and you lose your guns.

And now state republicans are sneaking this same anti-scheme behind your back in Madison.

Why Were State Politicians Silent About AB70 and SB44?

Darling Betrays Gun Owners
State Senator Alberta Darling (R) is pushing SB44 in the Wisconsin state senate. Darling's bill will expand the unconstitutional background check system.

On March 5, 2009, there was a public hearing on AB70 held in Madison, but virtually no one knew about it— even though the list of Representatives and State Senators sponsoring these gun control bills are a who’s-who of NRA super star politicians.

In other words, it appears the institutional gun lobby may be trying to shove this legislation through without too much fan fare— possibly with a wink and a nod from anti-gun democrats.

Could the fact that gun owners oppose such schemes, schemes expanding  the unconstitutional background check system, compel those who claim to be the guardians of our firearm  freedoms to cut deals with politicians without notifying their membership?

Why the silence?

What this means is, there is a major Pearl Harbor-style attack on your gun rights going down right this very minute in our state legislature.

Target number one: Veterans.

Target number two: You and your children and their children’s freedom.

ACTION:

  1. Critical…You Must Call and E-mail State Rep. Scott Gunderson (R-Waterford) and State Senator Alberta Darling (R- Menomonee Falls) IMMEDIATELY with the pre-written bullet points below. If you must leave a voice mail message over the weekend, do so.  But make sure you e-mail.
  2. You must contact your state representative and state senator and urge them to OPPOSE AB70 and SB44. You can find your state officials here. http://www.legis.wisconsin.gov/w3asp/waml/waml.aspx
  3. Contact NRA-ILA at 800-392-8683 and tell them to OPPOSE AB70 and SB44 and that  you expect them to REPEAL the NICS system, not expand it so that anti-gun psychiatrists can scribble prescriptions for what gun owners keep — or lose — their guns.

Rep. Scott Gunderson:

Gun owners OPPOSE AB70 and we are livid that someone who claims to be pro-gun would sneak through a bill expanding the unconstitutional National Instant Check System (NICS).

If you were a true friend of gun ownership, you would introduce legislation to REPEAL the NICS system, which has not only done nothing to thwart violent crime, but has been used as de facto gun owner registration.

AB70 will greatly expand the scope of NICS to include mental health data that can easily be used as a subjective analysis to disarm gun owners and veterans across Wisconsin without due process.

You are urged in the strongest terms to kill AB70 and apologize to gun owners.

Furthermore, I am appalled that the National Rifle Association (NRA) would fail to inform me of this insulting attack on liberty.  The NRA is wrong to support this bill.

I am a supporter of Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) and will be observing your behavior closely on this matter.

As gun owners brace for federal gun control in the form of a permanent semi-auto ban and here at the state level from a statewide ban on the private sales of handguns and increases in the cost of firearm background checks, it is unnerving that state republicans would have the audacity to sneak through their own de facto gun registration bill — and that the group that claims to represent gun owners appears to be nodding in agreement for further gun control from a dark, shadowy corner in the room.

Bottom line: You are being sold out. And time is not on your side. You must act quickly to stop this bill.

Tell your state representative to oppose the Gunderson-Darling Gun Registration and Veteran Disarmament Act, AB70 and SB44. Before it’s too late.

Be sure to check WGO's Bill Watch page as these bills move through the legislative process.

For analysis by WGO of why gun owners must OPPOSE expanding the NICS system, to stop this Big Brother system from reaching into all your private data while stomping due process, see the following references:
