Milwaukee legislator declares war on handgun ownership April 3, 2007 Coggs is about to launch a MASSIVE anti-gun proposal designed for one purpose: Government control of your handguns. In a press release, Coggs claimed there is a “public health crisis”...a “death by gun” emergency in Milwaukee County. "But what this is really about is exploiting Milwaukee’s crime problem to trash gun rights," said Corey Graff, Executive Director of Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. Coggs’ bill – SB104 – forces all private handgun sales between law-abiding citizens to be done through an FBI criminal background check. According to WGO, the proposal could cause law-abiding handgun owners to go to prison simply because they sold a handgun to their neighbor. This so-called “Responsible Gun Ownership Bill” is expected to accomplish nothing in terms of stopping thugs from buying guns or from committing violent crimes with guns. The handgun “loophole” Coggs seeks to close down is really just your Second Amendment freedom to own handguns for self-protection. Graff appeared on Milwaukee Public Radio recently and blasted the idea: " “The reason gun control doesn’t work is because criminals, by definition, do not obey the law!" he said. Stooping to a whole new low, Coggs is even trying to curry favor with African-American voters by claiming there is a “disproportionate number of victims among African-Americans.” However, says WGO, the Constitution protects the inalienable right of ALL Americans to “keep and BEAR arms” – to defend themselves. WGO said the bill doesn’t protect African-Americans — it victimizes everyone. "If Coggs were serious about preventing crime (he’s not), he would support a concealed carry law — instead of disarming good people (regardless of the color of their skin)," said Graff. "In fact, I’ll go so far as to say Coggs isn’t helping African-Americans in Milwaukee at all...he’s shamelessly exploiting them...and leaving everyone defenseless in the process by pushing a gun control agenda"
